Bio

Dr. Portnoy is a second-year clinical fellow in hematology and oncology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts. He received a bachelor of arts degree in neuroscience from Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts, and his medical degree from SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, New York. He completed an internship and residency in internal medicine in Philadelphia at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He was first drawn to the field of oncology while an intern on the hematologic malignancy/bone marrow transplant service, where he was impressed by the close bonds formed between the patients and their doctors and nurses. He was further drawn to the field by the role of immunology and biologic agents in the care of these patients. In addition to caring for patients with a wide variety of benign and malignant hematologic and oncologic conditions, he is currently studying genetic alterations in the pathogenesis of prostate cancer and mechanisms of androgen independence in that disease. His other areas of interest include genitourinary oncology and cancer survivorship.
