Tumor lysis syndrome (TLS), which results from massive lysis of malignant cells, is a potential life-threatening complication of treatment. The release of intracellular metabolites from lysed tumor cells can lead to acute renal failure, cardiac arrhythmias, seizures, and death. Rapid catabolism of purine-containing nucleic acids from lysed tumor cells can lead to renal insufficiency caused by precipitation of uric acid (UA) in the kidney.
