High Dose Melphalan (HDM) and stem cell transplantation is an effective treatment for AL amyloidosis, but is associated with high treatment related mortality in those with cardiac involvement. We studied 187 patients with AL and cardiac involvement who underwent HDM at our institution between May 1996 and September 2008. The median age was 57 years and median time to HDM from diagnosis was 3.6 months. Half of the patients received reduced dose melphalan (100-160 mg/m2). The median OS was 66 months...
