Targeted agents rather than cytokines (interferon alpha or interleukin 2) are now standard first-line therapy for patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC). Consequently, the predictive and prognostic factors for the disease that were developed for patients receiving cytokines need to be updated.
