Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been used experimentally and clinically in the treatment of a wide variety of pathologies. It is now clear that a number of different mechanisms contribute to the therapeutic effects exerted by these cells. The ability of MSCs to interact with and modulate the functions of a wide variety of immune cells has been recognized as one such mechanism.
