The European Medicines Agency warned March 18 of a supply shortage of thyrotropin alfa, a drug used for the diagnosis and treatment of thyroid tissue remnants following thyroidectomy in patients with thyroid cancer. Until July 2011, the manufacturer, Genzyme, which has struggled with equipment and quality control setbacks, will be able to meet only "approximately 45% of EU demand," the agency said in a press statement.
