Neoadjuvant Cetuximab and Chemoradiation

(00:04:30) Elsevier Global Medical News, 2009 Jan 15, R Finn

Dr. Harold J. Wanebo is a surgical oncologist from Woonsocket, Rhode Island, who is affiliated with Brown University.

Adding cetuximab to platinum- and paclitaxel-based neoadjuvant chemoradiation resulted in significant downstaging of locally advanced esophageal cancer, enabling 80% of patients to undergo resection. Study investigator Dr. Harold J. Wanebo characterized the 43%-48% complete or near-complete response rate achieved in this phase II trial as “very high” at the 2009 Gastrointestinal Cancers Symposium. Cetuximab also appeared to enhance survival, with a 2-year survival rate of 78% in responders vs 45% in nonresponders.
