Romiplostim for Refractory ITP
(00:02:32) Elsevier Global Medical News, 2009 Jun 7, ML Zoler
Dr. Mathias Rummel is Head, Division of Oncology, University Hospital Giessen and Marburg, Germany.
Treatment with romiplostim (Nplate), a platelet-stimulating agent, significantly reduced the need for splenectomy in patients with treatment-refractory immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) when compared with usual care. In this 200-patient randomized trial reported by Dr. Rummel at the 2009 EHA annual meeting, the splenectomy rate was 5% in the romiplostim-treated patients vs a 35% rate in control patients, which translated to an 83% relative reduction in the risk of splenectomy. The most commonly used treatments in control patients were corticosteroids, immunoglobulins, and rituximab.
