Lung Cancer Screening Via Sputum

(00:02:38) Elsevier Global Medical News, 2009 Aug 4, R Finn

Michael Meyer is Vice President for Image Engineering and Robert Honigberg is Consulting Chief Medical Officer at VisionGate, Inc., Gig Harbor, Washington.

Lung cancer cells are accurately detected in sputum by the new Lung Cell Evaluation Device (LuCED), which creates three-dimensional images of cells in sputum samples. LuCED, manufactured by VisionGate, Inc., is 100% accurate for identifying normal sputum cells and 90% accurate for cancer cells in sputum. Speaking at the 2009 World Conference on Lung Cancer, Michael Meyer and Dr. Robert Honigberg, both of VisionGate, say that LuCED, once approved, could be used to screen at-risk populations for lung cancer.
