New Lung Cancer Staging

(00:04:48) Elsevier Global Medical News, 2009 Aug 3, B Bates

Dr. Peter Goldstraw is Professor of Thoracic Surgery, National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College, London.

The first major revision of the TMN staging system for lung cancer in 20 years, unveiled at the 2009 International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) World Conference on Lung Cancer, will have a profound impact on treatment decisions. The 7th edition of the TMN staging will alter the staging category for 1 in 6 lung cancer patients, many of whom will receive different treatment modalities as a result, said Dr. Peter Goldstraw, chair of the IASCLC multidisciplinary staging committee. Unlike the previous TMN staging for lung cancer, changes in the 7th edition were based on more than 100,000 lung cancer cases from 46 centers in 19 countries.
